Rebuilding Hope and Community in Altadena
The Beacon Story
BEACON was born out of urgency.
Just five days after the Eaton fire, a group of individuals came together with one goal: find a way to help families return home.
In those first days, they saw the barriers forming in real time. Debris removal delays were already slowing recovery, so BEACON began speaking up in town halls and community meetings to advocate for faster action.
Soon after, another crisis emerged: survivors were being taken advantage of by illegitimate contractors who collected money without contracts and, in some cases, performed no work at all. BEACON responded by educating homeowners on how to protect themselves—emphasizing the importance of a design-first, then build process, and warning against giving contractors more than $1,000 upfront before proper documentation was in place.
What began as advocacy quickly grew into action. BEACON started hosting builder fairs, community panels, and educational events to help homeowners avoid predatory situations and connect them with trusted local designers and builders. By bringing these professionals together within the community, BEACON made the rebuilding process more accessible, more transparent, and more rooted in local relationships.
As homeowners began choosing trusted builders, another need became clear: those builders also needed resources to scale so they could serve more families effectively. BEACON evolved again—expanding its mission to support both homeowners and the local rebuilding ecosystem.
Now, BEACON is raising funds to fill the gaps insurance may not cover, remove barriers before they stop progress, and ensure that every family who wants to return home has a real path to do so.
BEACON exists to turn recovery into return home.
